CU1WA1. Conduct Abdomen and Pelvis Ultrasound Examination..

CU1WA2. Conduct Thoracic (non-cardiac) Ultrasound Examination.

CU1WA3. Conduct Superficial Structure Ultrasound Examination.

CU1WA4. Conduct Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Examination.

Perform general sonography describes the competencies to carry out abdominal, thoracic, superficial structure and musculoskeletal sonography in adult population.

The person who is competent in this CU should be able to conduct abdomen and pelvis ultrasound examination, conduct thoracic (non-cardiac) ultrasound examination, conduct superficial structure ultrasound examination and conduct musculoskeletal ultrasound examination.

The outcome of this CU is the production of high quality sonographic images with accurate clinical correlation for adult general sonography in compliance with regulatory health, safety and ethical requirements. 

Course Module

CU1WA1.

Conduct Abdomen and Pelvis Ultrasound Examination

  1. Ascertain patient’s prerequisites for
    ultrasound examination.
  2. Prepare ultrasound equipment.
  3. Prepare patient for abdomen and pelvis ultrasound examination.
  4. Carry out abdomen and pelvis ultrasonography.
  5. Capture ultrasound images.
  6. Interpret ultrasound findings. 
  7. Monitor patient’s condition. 
  8. Archive ultrasound images.
  9. Document preliminary results.
  10. Communicate test results to senior sonographer and radiologists/sonography credentialed doctors.
  11. Carry out housekeeping activities.

CU1WA2.

Conduct Thoracic (non-cardiac) Ultrasound Examination

  1. Ascertain patient’s prerequisites for
    ultrasound examination.
  2. Prepare ultrasound equipment.
  3. Prepare patient for thoracic ultrasound examination.
  4. Carry out thoracic ultrasonography.
  5. Capture ultrasound images. 
  6. Interpret ultrasound findings. 
  7. Monitor patient’s condition. 
  8. Archive ultrasound images. 
  9. Document preliminary results.
  10.  Communicate test results to senior sonographer and radiologists / sonography credentialed doctors.
  11. Carry out housekeeping activities. 

CU1WA3

Conduct Superficial Structure Ultrasound Examination

  1. Ascertain patient’s prerequisites for
    ultrasound examination. 
  2. Prepare ultrasound equipment.
  3. Prepare patient for superficial
    structure ultrasound examination.
  4. Carry out superficial structure
    ultrasonography. 
  5. Capture ultrasound images. 
  6. Interpret ultrasound findings. 
  7. Monitor patient’s condition. 
  8. Archive ultrasound images. 
  9. Document preliminary results. 
  10. Communicate test results to senior sonographer / radiologists. 
  11. Carry out housekeeping activities. 

CU1WA4

Conduct Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Examination

  1. Ascertain patient’s prerequisites for
    ultrasound examination. 
  2. Prepare ultrasound equipment. 
  3. Prepare patient for musculo-skeletal
    ultrasound examination. 
  4. Carry out musculoskeletal
    ultrasonography. 
  5. Capture ultrasound images. 
  6. Interpret ultrasound findings. 
  7. Monitor patient’s condition. 
  8. Archive ultrasound images.
  9. Document preliminary results.
  10. Communicate test results to senior sonographer / radiologists. 
  11. Carry out housekeeping activities.

Entry Requirement

Occupational prerequisites for a certified sonographer include the following: 

  • Be in good physical health; and 
  • Have at least a diploma in medical sonography (Note: Qualification must encompass General Sonography, Paediatric Sonography, Obstetrics & Gynaecology Sonography and Vascular Sonography). 

Practitioners who have undergone specific field training at a recognised institution with minimum three years’ experience will be considered as certified specialty sonographer (example Obstetrics & Gynaecology Sonographer, Cardiac Sonographer. 

Career Opportunity

The Medical Sonography Level 4 personnel is competent in performing the following core competencies:

  • Perform general sonography;
  • Perform paediatric sonography;
  • Perform obstetrics & gynaecology sonography; and
  • Perform vascular sonography. 

For added value, the Medical Sonography Level 4 personnel is competent in performing the following elective competencies:

  • Perform cardiac sonography.
